Interview with Animal RN

Hi everyone!  For the last few weeks I have had the pleasure of meeting some amazing local Sonoma County business men and women through a personal development course, Mind in Business. We are conducting a mock economy and I thought it would be fun to highlight some of them here, in exchange for some of the ‘funny money’ we are using in the class! This way I get to know the local businesses better, and they get to see the effects of spreading their message online through blogging and social media.

The first business I’d like to introduce you to is Robyn Kesnow, RVT from Animal RN. We’ve compiled some interview questions that will paint a great picture for you of this unique and needed service. 

Robyn Kesnow, RVTWhat is the name of your business and briefly describe what you do.

Animal RN.  What is an Animal RN? Technically the title for an animal nurse is R.V.T., Registered Veterinary Technician.  Lead by Robyn Kesnow, RVT, Animal RN brings a piece of the veterinary world to pet owners, in their own homes.  Sometimes as pet owners we need the help and support of our veterinary professionals, but we don’t necessarily need to see the doctor.  Animal RN helps to bridge this gap.

How or why did you decide to start this business?

The original idea for Animal RN stems from over 10 years experience working as an RVT, in the traditional, veterinary clinic setting.  The staff was often asked for additional support for pet parents facing a new medication or treatment for their pets, or even when they wanted to get away and had “special needs” animals.  Whether helping teach how to give sub-cutaneous fluids in a stress free way at home, or  administering time sensitive medication over vacations, Animal RN’s goal is to support pet parents at a new level.

What products or services do you offer?

We offer a variety of services from consulting to 24/7 hospice/ respite care.

Consultations are an Animal RN favorite; the topics are endless and we offer guaranteed value.  Have you wondered why your cat/ dog will play with some toys and not others?  How much money have you spent on the perfect toy, for it to come home and sit in the corner?  Have you wondered if there was a method behind the madness?

We can save you money by helping you understand what your pet is trying to tell you about their toys, the beds/ surfaces they lay on, potty areas and more.  The consultations are a great way to see how you better honor your pets and live with less stress, and less money wasted.

The biggest and best thing Animal RN families walk away with is peace of mind.  More than the saved time, more than the saved money, the peace of mind is invaluable.  They may be furry, but that doesn’t make them any less our children and worthy of the same love they offer us.

What is unique about your business when compared to your competitors?

Another popular service is our pet sitting.  The unique thing about Animal RN is that you have to be qualified to be an Animal RN pet sitting family.  This means we strictly focus on our specialty: animals that are seniors and/ or have special needs.  While we love a young, healthy dog or cat we make sure we are always available for those that can no longer be boarded or that have a condition that requires the specialized medical knowledge we bring.  Don’t worry, if you have multiple pets, not everyone has to be sick or elderly!  We have had the great pleasure of helping temporarily after spay/ neuter and other surgeries or more regularly in the golden years.

Who are your ideal customers or what is the demographic/target of your business?

An ideal customer for Animal RN lives in Sonoma County or Northern Marin.  They have cat(s) and/or dog(s) and talk about their pets often.  They probably shop for their own food at places such as Whole Foods, Oliver’s or Pacific Markets.  They may have recently been to their veterinarian, or think they should go soon, but are concerned about their pet(s.)

What is your company’s mission?

Animal RN acts as advocate, first between pet and owner, then between pet owner and veterinary professionals.  Our mission is to help pet owners promote health and longevity through compassion and guidance.  Animal RN Families become educated and active partners in their pet’s care.

What 3 pieces of advice would you give other entrepreneurs?

Three pieces of advise for entrepreneurs?  1- get out of your head; you don’t get to decide what people will find valuable or what they will pay for it, they’ll tell you.  2- get out of your office; no one can see you or refer to you if you’re clammed up in your office all day.  3- join an organization like BNI; the professions can all act as your support team, helping you be the best at what you do (besides growing your business!)

To share one last thing about Animal RN, it really is about giving and honoring families more than a a way to make money.  It is so beautiful to see a family doing their best to truly love and live the best life they can with their furry family members.  To share with them the information to help them do it better, do it more easily and to do it for less is our honor, not just a business.  On behalf of the furry friends you love, thank you!
