How to Protect Your Privacy on Facebook

This video demonstration is for those people who want to have SUPER private privacy settings on Facebook. Sometimes people want to use Facebook for business, or maybe they are only on there to monitor certain family members (teens anyone?) but do not want people to know they are on Facebook or to be able to look them up. Since you do need to create a regular Facebook account in your own name if you are following Facebook’s rules, this can be a dilemma.

This video explains how to create SUPER tight Facebook privacy settings for those of you in this situation. Find out where ALL the settings are – Facebook does not make it obvious – so that you can check and reach each item and decide for yourself just how private you would like each item to be. In most cases you can set each thing to be visible to “everyone” meaning – well, everyone! Or you can set it so that only “friends of freinds” can see the items – meaning it is OK for your friends and their friends to see. Or you can set it so that only “friends” can see the items – only people you are actually already Facebook friends with. Or you can set it to “Custom” which then offers you the option of setting the item privacy to either “Only Me” which means no one can see it but you (completely private) or “Specific People” which can be certain people on your Friends or even Friend Lists if you’ve created those. You can also in some cases HIDE certain items from specific people (boss? ex?) and leave them more open for everyone else.

Be sure to check your Privacy Settings area often, as Facebook seems to have a habit of changing and adding new features now and then without warning – and they are usually set to ‘everyone’ by default!

I hope this is helpful! Let me know in the comments if you have further questions!

Thanks Anet – and you’re welcome. I decided to do this on awhim because my aunt and her friend didn’t want anyone to find them on FB – they wanted to only be the ones requesting a connection with certain people. I’m much more open but I know many people prefer to keep things closed up!

That was awesome! I had no idea all that was there. I think I’ve got some privacy settings to deal with. Thank you so much for the info!

Great video! Why does Facebook have to make everything so hard to find? This video has come at the right time since my daughter has just started begging to get on facebook. Now I’ll know exactly what I need to do to set her account privacy settings up correctly.
