Marketing to Moms this Holiday Season

Selling to the Mommy MarketWhen I started marketing my own direct selling business online in 1998, I was the mother of two. One 4 year old and a 1 year old. I was desperately hoping to put off “going back to work” as long as possible, even though I had promised to stay home just a year (what was I thinking!) and as a young military family we struggled financially.

I was living in Florida and although I had connected with a mommy group, I felt isolated. I knew I had found communities of moms online already just for general chit chat and talking about raising our babies. In fact my username in the mom chats was “Soapbox” because I was always getting on my virtual soapbox about natural parenting, breastfeeding, and homeschooling, long before I found my direct sales business.

I knew there were valuable connections among moms online, so when I did start my business, that is where I went to network. Needless to say, it worked! I rose to the top of my company quickly, in no small part because of the online connections I made in addition to my “real life” home party business and local team building which thrived as well.

Today, Moms are even more connected online due to social media. In fact, a recent study found that mothers of children under 5 are twice as likely to use social media. And not just to connect with other moms, but to SHOP.

The study by Experian found that:

  • Moms with young kids are the most habitual social networking users – visiting sites 2 or 3x per day, and twice as likely to post or comment.
  • They are mobile power users – twice as likely to access the web by smart phone or iPad
  • They respond well to advertising – highest segment to rank advertising as an influence in shopping decisions
  • They use their mobile phones to look for coupons – 62% more likely to shop with coupons, and more likely to shop online even after seeing a product in person
