Online Presence Parallels Offline Presence

It’s a Parallel Universe!

As a business person, hopefully you know and understand that relationships are everything. In the online world, relationships are also key. I like to think of the Internet as parallel to a “real life” party. Some of the people are friends, some are acquaintances, and many are people you have not yet met. At this party, you have the potential to meet a lot of new people who may or may not be interested in what you have to offer, and they may have something you are interested in learning more about as well! If you conduct yourself online in a way similar to the way you would in real life, focusing on relationships, it will guide you to being true to your own values and principles, and not getting caught up in the ‘hype’ or ‘trends’ that aren’t always best for business.

When you are building your online presence, look for the parallels and ask yourself, “Is this something I would say, do, or be, in real life?” Activities that focus on connecting with people in real ways to instill loyalty and trust, or that help you position yourself as an expert or dependable resource in the field are always going to further your business more than hard selling, offline and on.
