This is primarily aimed at new/young direct selling companies such as those I met at the most recent Direct Selling Edge conference. However, if your company is more established, or you are a top party plan leader, you may benefit from this also if you have not yet taken these steps.
When I was a field leader, one of the best ways I found to build my team and sponsor people from all over the USA into my party plan business was to get listed in online directories and in classifieds within discussion forums. With the advent of social media, some people think these “old school” ways are long gone, but I assure you they are not. In fact, with a simple google search on “find a party plan business” or “direct sales business opportunities” you will see many such websites come up. This is because most of the people running the directories and forums have been doing so for years, and because Google gives extra points to older, established, yet dynamic websites with lots of fresh content and links, these sites rank high in the search engines.
The opportunity for you then is to also get found in the search engines by participating in these sites. Each one is another “doorway” into your business, the way social media sites are. In most cases it is simple to participate, either for free or usually for a small annual or monthly fee. I recommend all companies – especially startups – get listed in as many places as you can. This will help you build up your founding consultant base, and also give your existing distributors a model to use if they choose to also list their own business, or to get listed regionally.
If you are a distributor or top leader in a direct sales company I would consider participating in these only if you have set aside a budget for advertising. In most cases you might not see results right away but you will over time, so I recommend sticking with it at least a few months if not a year. Of course there are many free ways to build your online presence, as I’ve explained in other posts and webinar trainings. Getting listed in these online directories and forums is not a make or break opportunity, however I do think every company should have at least one listing whenever possible, whether placed by the home office or by a top leader. If you are an independent consultant or leader, be sure to adhere to your company’s Internet marketing policies, and always make it clear you are listing yourself as a representative, not the company.
Following is a list I’ve compiled of the most popular places to get listed. I have not personally worked with all of them but I know that they do come up in the search engines so are probably worthwhile on some level. When you visit each site, look for the tab or link to Advertise, or Submit Your Company to find out what is involved in getting listed.
If you have already used these to list your own company or independent business, leave a comment and let us know what the results have been.
